Chicago in August is a delightful mix of sunny days, vibrant festivals, and the last hurrah of summer before the cooler winds of autumn begin to blow. If you’re a pet parent, you know that your furry friends deserve to enjoy the city as much as you do. Whether you have a playful pup or a curious cat, you still have time to revel in the weather before the winds blow cold! Here are our best bets:

Strolls Along the Lakefront Trail

Start your day with a refreshing walk along the Lakefront Trail. This 18-mile path offers stunning views of Lake Michigan and the city skyline. Early mornings and late afternoons are the best times to avoid the heat and enjoy a leisurely walk. Many areas along the trail provide pet waste stations, making it convenient to keep the path clean. Remember to bring plenty of water for both you and your pet to stay hydrated.

Beach Day at Montrose Dog Beach

Nothing says summer like a day at the beach. Montrose Dog Beach is the perfect spot for your dog to run, swim, and socialize off-leash. It’s Chicago’s first legal off-leash beach, and it’s well-maintained by the community. Make sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations and has a DFA tag, which you can easily obtain from a local vet or the city. Don’t forget to pack a beach umbrella, sunscreen, and some toys for a fun-filled day.

Picnic in Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park offers vast green spaces, beautiful gardens, and shaded areas ideal for a picnic. Grab a blanket, some snacks, and a few toys, and head to this urban oasis. The park is also home to the Lincoln Park Zoo, which, while not pet-friendly, can be a nice walk-by experience. The serene setting of the North Pond Nature Sanctuary within the park is also a great place to relax with your pet.

Patio Dining at Pet-Friendly Restaurants

Chicago’s dining scene is diverse and pet-friendly. Many restaurants offer patio seating where your pet is welcome. Some even provide water bowls and treats. A few favorites include:

Parson’s Chicken & Fish: Known for its fried chicken and Negroni slushies, this spot welcomes dogs on its patio.

The Promontory: Located in Hyde Park, it offers a great outdoor seating area for you and your pet to enjoy.

Big Star: A Wicker Park staple with a large patio and a menu filled with delicious tacos and margaritas.

Dog-Friendly Events and Festivals

August in Chicago is packed with events and festivals, and many are dog-friendly. Look out for:

Chicago Air and Water Show: While it might be loud for some pets, if your dog isn’t scared of noise, this can be an exciting day out by the lake.

Dog Days of Summer at Navy Pier: This event offers pet-friendly activities, vendors, and even a pet parade.

Barktoberfest: Though technically in September, it’s worth mentioning as a fun, pet-centric event with food, music, and dog-friendly activities.

Pet Boutiques and Bakeries

Spoil your pet with a visit to one of Chicago’s many pet boutiques and bakeries. From gourmet treats to stylish accessories, these shops have it all:

Tails in the City: A luxury pet boutique in the Gold Coast with chic pet accessories.

Paw Naturals: Located in the West Loop, it offers natural pet food, treats, and toys.

Barkfield Inn & Suites: This bakery in Lincoln Park offers delicious and healthy treats that your pet will love.

Pet-Friendly Parks and Trails

Aside from the Lakefront Trail, Chicago boasts numerous parks and trails perfect for pet exploration:

Grant Park: Often referred to as “Chicago’s front yard,” it offers wide-open spaces and beautiful gardens.

Humboldt Park: Known for its scenic lagoons and historic boathouse, it’s a great place for a peaceful walk.

The 606: An elevated trail that spans 2.7 miles, perfect for a scenic walk or run with your dog.

Cool Off with a Pet Spa Day

After all the outdoor adventures, treat your pet to a spa day. Many grooming salons in Chicago offer luxurious treatments to pamper your pet:

Soggy Paws: With several locations around the city, they offer self-wash stations and full grooming services.

Urban Pooch: Located in Ravenswood, it offers grooming, daycare, and even training services.

Chicago in August offers endless opportunities for pet-friendly fun. From scenic walks and beach days to dining out and attending events, there’s something for every pet and their owner. Remember to always keep your pet’s comfort and safety in mind, especially during the hot summer days. With this guide, you and your furry friend are all set to make unforgettable memories in the Windy City. Enjoy your summer adventures!
