Welcome to Noble Square

So noble. So square. The history of Noble Square goes back a ways to early 19th century Chicago pioneers John and Mark Noble- who were noble indeed. After the Blackhawk Wars, Mark Noble butchered cattle to feed the hungry and avert famine; he also founded the first Chicago Methodist Church. The “square” likely refers to square shaped Eckhart Park at the corner of Chicago Ave. and Noble Street, or a square of 12 acres on Noble Street that was redeveloped in the 1960s by the Department of Urban Renewal. The redevelopment displaced many Polish residents, who settled the area in the early 20th century. Nevertheless, the Polish left their mark on the area with two very large cathedrals, St. Stanislaus Kostka and Holy Trinity.

Today Noble Square is an interesting mix of young families and the old guard. Like other West Town neighborhoods, artists drawn to the area for cheap rent 20 years ago have set the vibe. A bit more affordable than Wicker Park or Bucktown, Noble is a great choice for young people buying their first home, or anyone who wants to live close to downtown without breaking the bank. Though largely residential, there’s enough local business to meet the needs of residents. Ashland Avenue has banks, a post office, and a grocer. On Milwaukee Avenue and Division Street you’ll find eclectic shops and cafes to choose from.
